The Twin Geeks 60: Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

Well, it’s Groundhog Day, again, and as much as we’d love to just repeat out thoughts on the film from last year, it’s 2020 now, which means we have a slew of not-so-distant sci-fi action films failing our expectations of the future, one of which just so happens to take its videogame-inspired plot mechanic from our favorite film about reliving the same day over, and over again. Though it didn’t see much initial love at the box office, Edge of Tomorrow has managed to stand out as one of the more enjoyable and original action films of the last decade, harkening back to the high-concept, thrilling blockbusters of the 1980s. We get to see Tom Cruise in a rare role: someone not immediately capable and effortlessly winning at what he does, as he tries and tries again to maneuver his way around a tense battlefield of an invading alien threat. It may be banal to dog the film as being repetitive, that’s kind of the entire point, but Cruise and co-star Emily Blunt, alongside the supporting talents of Bill Paxton and Brendan Gleason, keep Edge of Tomorrow a fun and inventive action film that holds up over many, many repeated viewings.
